If you swap the subject of an image (girl → boy, cat → dog) the mood barely changes. But swap golden hour for blue hour, or warm colors for muted cool palette, and the entire image tells a different story. Lighting and color are the two dominant mood levers in AI image prompting. 3. Color theory primer
Color in AI prompting has three independently controllable axes: temperature, saturation, harmony.
Temperature
warm colors (orange/red/yellow) — cozy, nostalgic, intimate. cool colors (blue/teal/purple) — calm, distant, mysterious.
Saturation
vibrant colors — energetic, pop, anime. muted colors / desaturated — documentary, melancholy, realism. pastel colors — soft, dreamy, kawaii.
Harmony
complementary colors — high contrast. analogous colors — adjacent wheel, harmonious. monochromatic — single hue, cohesive.
Named palettes tend to work better than descriptive color tags: sepia, teal and orange (the Hollywood cinematic standard), cyan and magenta (cyberpunk), earthy tones, jewel tones, neon palette.

4. Texture — surface qualities
Texture tags tell the model whether surfaces should look smooth, rough, glossy, matte, or worn. They're subtle but critical for making materials feel believable.
Clean: smooth, glossy, polished, reflective — modern product shots, glass, metal.
Organic: matte, textured, canvas texture, rough, grainy — paintings, skin, fabric.
Aged: weathered, rust, patina, cracked, worn — post-apocalyptic, fantasy ruins.
Medium: watercolor texture, oil paint texture, pencil sketch texture, film grain — stylistic medium signals.

5. Background — where it happens
Background tags place your subject in a world. Be specific — forest is fine, but misty pine forest at dawn gives the model three times more to work with.
