How much negative prompt is enough

Does a longer negative prompt make the picture better?

Negative prompts passed around online usually run past twenty words, on the belief that longer is safer. Few people check how much of it is actually paying for itself.

Below, anatomy terms, then quality terms, then the rest are added on top of a safety guard. The positive prompt and the seed are fixed.

The cuts below share a seed and a sampler, but the prompt differs from cut to cut. Open any cut to see the full prompt it received.

What each cut shows

none
Nothing but the safety guard, and still no mangled hands or collapsed quality.
guard only
Anatomy terms added. Nearly identical to the previous cut.
quality terms
Quality terms on top. The hair comes loose and buttons appear at the neckline, but nothing looks sharper or cleaner.
full stack
A full stack of the usual length. Beside the first cut the hair, neckline and hedges clearly differ, but neither looks better drawn.

Takeaway

When the positive prompt is specific, the negative has little left to do. Filling in the positive pays better than lengthening the negative.

How far this result reaches

This holds when the prompt is already sound. The opposite case is next door: an empty positive lets the model go anywhere. The safety terms are not a length question and were kept on every cut.
