Rim light — which tag actually makes it

Does typing rim light actually put light on the outline?

Rim light traces a bright line along the silhouette to lift a subject off the background. There is a tag with exactly that name, so it should be enough — it was not.

Our own lighting guide taught rim light as technique number one. Its recipe also contained backlighting, so the pictures came out — but the credit went to the wrong token. A reader who lifted just the headline tag saw nothing happen.

Every cut below shares one seed, one base prompt and one sampler setting, and differs only by the tag marked in amber.

What each cut shows

rim light
No contour light. An ordinary front-lit portrait, even against a dark background.
edge lighting
Also no rim. Notably this tag scored high when measured — it changes the image, just not in the way its name promises.
backlighting, from behind
Light rides the shoulder and hair line. This is the effect you were looking for, with the subject turning away so the silhouette carries.
hard lighting
No rim, and the contrast is about the same as the other front-lit cuts; the crisp shadows of a hard light did not appear.

Takeaway

A tag with the right name does not always do the job. On this checkpoint, ask for backlighting with from behind.

How far this result reaches

Generators that read plain English, like NovelAI or Midjourney, understand rim light directly. This is a vocabulary problem in one booru-trained checkpoint.

Measured on a single Stable Diffusion family checkpoint. The same tags can behave differently on NovelAI, Midjourney or another checkpoint. This is a reference point, not a verdict.
