A closer look

long exposure is in the recipe, yet the water is not smoothed to silk: ripples and glints stay crisp. Focus, on the other hand, is deep as f/8 asks: the leaves on the near bank are crisp, and the distant trunks fade into fog rather than into blur, the opposite of the melted background in the portrait photography cut. Sun rays through the trees, blue fog and golden maple leaves share one frame, so nearly every clause of the recipe landed. The right bank of the stream is carpeted in orange leaves.
