Texture tags refine the surface quality of rendered objects and characters: smooth_skin, rough_fabric, metallic, glass, crystalline, porous, weathered. They are most useful when combined with material-specific subject tags — a stone sword rendered with weathered and rough applied to its context tag produces convincingly aged output, whereas the same stone sword with polished and smooth looks ceremonial. Texture tags are also effective for style calibration: pair crystalline with fantasy themes, weathered with post-apocalyptic themes, smooth_skin with portraits. Note that texture tags tend to affect the dominant visual element of the image — if your prompt emphasizes a character, texture tags will primarily modify the character. To apply texture to a background element, explicitly name it together (stone_wall, weathered).

Pair texture tags with material names rather than using them alone. Too many competing textures (smooth_skin + rough_fabric + metallic_armor) are fine if each targets a different object in the scene; problems arise when they target the same element. Keep to two or three texture tags per image.
These categories pair naturally with texture / surface tags — adding one tag from each builds a more cohesive prompt.
